Women's Spotlight: Melissa "Mel" Vinson

What different roles have you held throughout your career?

I have always worked in service or support roles because I love to help others. I once held two full time positions (one in the restaurant space and one at a bank). During my time at the bank, I held multiple positions. I entered the equipment finance space as a collector. From there I worked in Documentation, Operations, Booking and Funding, Sales and Sales Support. Today, my role in Marketing and Development allows me the chance to connect with our community, be a strong communicator, and help grow this industry.

What traits have made you successful in the various roles you have had?

I have always been a firm believer in the power of positivity at work. No matter what you do, having a great attitude and joyful outlook will take you far! Every day is a chance to learn and grow. I am also very detailed, organized, and goal driven. These traits combined have really helped me grow across my career.

What is the best piece of career advice you've been given?

Remember that you are a vital voice and do not be afraid to communicate. Also, to never give up, and always be willing to try again – you never know what a new role, industry, or company could do for your goals and your growth.

What is the biggest challenge either personally or professionally you have had to overcome? What did you learn from the experience?

It was difficult graduating college with very limited job prospects while having student loan debt to repay. I knew that I had to start somewhere and for nearly 10 years, I worked multiple jobs. It was extremely difficult juggling multiple places of employment and not using my degree’s skillset. I learned so much about time management, making the most of each moment, and how to save money on a very tight budget. While these were hard lessons during this tricky season in my life, I learned SO much along the way and developed many skills during this time. When I was finally able to only work one job, I made the most of reprioritizing friendships and focused on continuing education. Everything and every season happens for a reason! It was tough, but all that hard work and time helped me become who I am today.

What advice do you wish you knew when you were starting out in your career?

Work-life balance is KEY. There is no job that should take priority over your family and friends, your health, or you. Be careful to set boundaries around all these things so you do not miss out.

What is the best decision you have made for your career (and yourself)?

Not to sound cliche because I work for the CLFP Foundation now…but honestly, it was taking the plunge and pursing the CLFP designation. It was something different than I had ever thought to pursue, but it was a big goal, and I wanted to do it. By rising to this challenge, I learned so much more about our industry, my company and even myself. I had such a positive experience that I knew I wanted to stick with this organization for the long run. After earning my CLFP letters, I started volunteering with the Foundation and it eventually resulted in the role that I have today. It was a full circle moment. I am now able to help others achieve this goal which is the best thing to me!

What’s your mantra and why?

“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift”. This is one of my all-time favorite quotes by Steve Prefontaine. It reminds me to give my best in all that I do. We all have different skills and abilities. Celebrating wins and effort is huge to me.

What extracurricular activities do you take part in?

I love being outside and some of my favorites include running, biking, hiking, and photography. My biggest passion is relay running. I have taken part in the world’s largest running relay (Hood to Coast) over the last 10 years and cannot get enough.

What are your hopes and dream for the Leasing Industry?

I hope that we continue to grow in curiosity, thought, inclusion, and in community. We are this incredible industry that most people do not consider when speaking of a profession or business career. I hope to change that in the coming years. This is a space of incredible talent, brilliance, and networks. My hope is that we continue to grow together as professionals to support our customers and each other.
