French is the official language in the Province of Quebec [section 1]. French is also deemed "the normal and everyday language of work, instruction, communication, commerce and business" within Quebec [Preamble]. As such, workers have a right to carry on their activities in French [section 4].
All firms carrying on business in Quebec must comply with the requirements of the Charter respecting the language of work [sections 41-50]. In addition, the Charter contains rules regarding the use of French in public signs, commercial advertising, brochures, documents and communications with the general public [sections 52-58]. In some cases, a translation may be provided as long as French is given equal prominence.
Companies with 50 or more employees in Quebec must comply with the provisions regarding the "francization of business firms" [sections 135-154]. Such companies must register with the Office de la langue française, the agency that oversees the application of the Charter. If necessary, a plan is devised to ensure the use of French in communications and working documents. Francization does not necessarily exclude the use of English or another language in a business firm, but makes it obligatory to use French together with other languages.
